Round trip 5 days |
|
Map |
| Five
days give you the opportunity to experience a South Greenlandic
town, two different settlements and a beautiful landscape of
great variation. The tour takes you to the town Qaqortoq (Julianehåb),
the cultural and educational centre of South Greenland. We make
a stop at Hvalsø Church (the best preserved ruin from
the Norse period), before arriving at Igaliku, the most beautiful
village in Greenland! Here you stay one night at the cosy Igaliku
Country Hotel. The next day you visit Brattahlid (today Qassiarsuk);
the place where Eric the Red settled down 1000 years ago. Finally,
it is time for a boat trip among the turquoise icebergs at the
Qooroq Ice Fjord. |

Thursday

Narsarsuaq to Qaqortoq (the boat transfer takes two hours).
Accommodation at Hotel Qaqortoq or Qaqortoq B&B for two
nights.
Friday
Qaqortoq, which means "The White", is the biggest
town in South Greenland with 3500 inhabitants. Qaqortoq is the
education centre for South Greenland with grammar school, school
of commerce and folk high school. Furthermore, the town has
several fair-sized companies such as Great Greenland with tannery
and sewing facilities for creating beautiful sealskin clothes.
Around the town, the visitor will meet sculptures being a part
of the famous project "Stone & People", where
different sculptors have made the town a big sculpture park.
Greenland's oldest fountain is situated at the town square next
to the harbour. Here you can sit and watch the hunters and anglers
arriving with today's catch for the market.
Saturday
Departure by boat to Hvalsø Church Ruin. Here
we make a one-hour stop (no guide), and you can walk around
these amazing ruins from the Norse period. Hvalsø Church
is the latest evidence of Norse activities, as there is a written
description of a weeding hold in the church in September 1408!
The boat continues to the village Igaliku. Igaliku
is very beautiful situated at a green and fertile plain. On
the other side of the fjord towers the landmark Illerfissalik
(Burfjeld) with its snow-covered peak piercing the clear blue
sky. Igaliku was the Episcopal seat during the Norse period,
and the ruins from that time are very impressive. In 1782 Anders
Olsen and his Greenlandic wife Tuperna established themselves
as farmers at the same land, and that was the beginning of Igalikus
newer history. There is a small museum in the church, which
is worth visiting. Today the village thrives from sheep farming.
Accommodation at Igaliku Country Hotel for one night.
Sunday
In the morning you walk the 3 km at the "Kings
Road" (named after the Danish King Frederik 9th's visit
in 1952) from Igaliku to Itilleq. The hike is easy, but you
can also get a ride with the car, which is transporting your
luggage. Boat transfer from Itilleq to Qassiarsuk
also known as Brattahlid, the place where Erik the Red settled
in 982. The trip includes the entrance to the Norse reconstructions
of Erik the Red's farm and Tjodhilde's Church, where a guide
will show you around. Late afternoon boat transfer to Narsarsuaq.
Accommodation Hotel Narsarsuaq for one night.
Monday
Check out the room. Luggage can be left at the hotel.
9 .00 - 12.00 Boat trip to the Qooroq Ice Fjord. A boat trip
among icebergs of all colours, sizes and shapes. When the glacier
is in view, the boat engine is stopped, so you can enjoy the
absolute silence and a drink chilled with glacier ice - more
than 1000 years old!
